Key Facts

Gross GST collection in October 2026 rose 22.9% year-on-year to about ₹2.31 lakh crore (₹2,31,290 crore), the second-highest monthly figure after the record of roughly ₹2.4 lakh crore in April. Revenue from domestic transactions grew 16% to over ₹1.59 lakh crore, while GST on imports surged 42% to ₹72,246 crore. The total comprises CGST of ₹42,935 crore, SGST of ₹51,340 crore and IGST of over ₹1.37 lakh crore. Refunds rose 6.5% to ₹27,934 crore, leaving net collection at over ₹2.03 lakh crore, up 26%. In April-October gross collections grew 13.2% to ₹14.77 lakh crore. Analysts attribute the jump to festive demand and the post-rate-rationalisation tax regime, but caution against reading one month as a lasting consumption boom.

GK Context

GST was introduced on 1 July 2017 through the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act, 2016; Article 279A created the GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister. IGST is levied on inter-state supplies and on imports, while CGST and SGST apply to intra-state supplies. The September 2025 rationalisation moved most goods to two main rates of 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for demerit goods. Gross GST above ₹2 lakh crore has now been recorded in two consecutive months.
