Key Facts

Iran warned that a renewed war with the United States would last longer and could spread geographically if threats escalate, and its officials rejected externally dictated conditions for ending any conflict. The warnings raise risks for Gulf energy supplies, commercial shipping and Indians living in West Asia, although public threats do not by themselves mean a new war has begun. On 1 November an oil spill from a tanker attacked near the Strait of Hormuz spread along the UAE coast, and Sharjah temporarily closed all its public beaches. Somali pirates also seized an Iranian fishing vessel, the Azini, with 23 people on board near a commercial shipping lane.

GK Context

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil trade, and it is one of the world's most important energy chokepoints. India imports most of its crude oil and spends roughly ₹14 lakh crore a year on hydrocarbon imports, so higher prices or disruptions in the Gulf affect inflation, the rupee and the fiscal position. Around 90 lakh Indians live and work in the Gulf region.
